Data Engineer resume keywords: what 81 real job posts ask for

We collected 81 open data engineer job posts from 43 companies on November 8, 2026 and counted how often each skill, tool, and credential appears. Use this list to see what employers ask for. Then check your resume against the one job you are applying to, because that post is the list that counts.

Key takeaways

  • The five keywords that appear most often in data engineer job posts: SQL (86%), Python (84%), Data pipelines (79%), Data analysis (77%), Scalability (63%).
  • A share is the percent of posts that mention the keyword at least once. No single post asks for all of them.
  • Add a keyword only if it is true for you. Then use the job post's exact words for it.

How to use these data engineer keywords

  1. Start from the job post, not this list. This list shows what is common. The post you apply to shows what that recruiter will search for.
  2. Use the post's exact words. If the post says "SQL", write "SQL", not a synonym. Recruiters search with the words from their own post.
  3. Prove each keyword in a bullet. A skills list helps the search. A bullet with a result convinces the person who reads it.
  4. Leave out what is not true. An interviewer will ask about every keyword on your resume.

Where these numbers come from

On November 8, 2026 we collected 16,943 open job posts from 98 companies through their public Greenhouse, Lever, and Ashby job board APIs. We sorted posts into roles by job title and removed duplicates. Then we matched each post against a fixed list of keywords and their common spellings. To keep one large company from setting the result, we used at most 25 posts per company per role. Most of these companies are US tech companies, so the shares can differ in other industries.
